There’s a new producer of fermented cod liver oil. Green Pasture in the USA used to be the only game in town. Now we have our own European producer, hailing from Wales: Armorica.
Armorica’s fermented cod liver oil is produced by controlled cold lacto-fermentation of cod livers. Cod (Gadus morhua) is caught in the North Atlantic.
As cod liver oil is produced by fermentation, there is no need for any heat treatment. Chemicals are also not used. The entire process is gentle and natural.
Traditional cod liver oil
In the past, cod liver oil was always produced by fermentation. Cod liver oil was perhaps the very first food supplement.
However, the production of cod liver oil changed dramatically in the 1900s. Mass production has arrived. Fast, cheap and in bulk was the new motto. Naturally, this had an effect on the quality of the liver transplant.
Armorica is committed to the traditional production process, albeit with a few minor modern improvements. For example, fermentation takes place in a completely oxygen-free environment, which prevents oxidation of omega-3 fatty acids. The result: a fermented cod liver oil that combines the best of modernity and tradition.
Sicilian lemon oil
That probably didn’t exist in the past either. The cod liver oil is enriched with Sicilian organic lemon oil. This gives the cod liver oil a pleasant taste. You can still taste the “Tran” but it is comparatively mild.
